What precautions should be taken to prevent arthritis? Does it occur with palti posture(sitting cross legged) and squatting?

It Occurs From Continuous Pressure Over Joint Cartilage During Activities of daily living like squatting; Making Palti Posture(sitting cross legged) ; Using Indian Toilet.. As a Prevention and Precaution One should go for full R.O.M. exercises, weight reduction and should have calcium rich diet. Swimming is one of the best exercise for arthritis, as it deloades the joint while exercising muscles.

Are there any medicines which can revert or halt cartilage damage?

osteoarthritis (age related knee joint pain) is mechanical wear & tear of knee joint cartilage. It is actually an aging process. In very early stages of osteoarthritis medicines like glucosamine, diacerin etc. can alter or slow down the progression of disease. Pain killers can make patient comfortable, but medicines cannot cure arthritis.

Will knee replacement be successful in patient who has ca+ deficiency, osteoporosis, weak bones?

Treatment of Ca+ deficiency, osteoporosis & weak bones is medicines that deposits calcium in bone and loading of bones through walking and exercising. Treating patients only with medicines is not effective. So it is very important to make patients pain free and mobile. so if patient with osteoporosis has knee arthritis, we treat them simultaneously with medication & knee replacement surgery.

Is there any right age for total knee replacement?

Usually knee replacement is a surgery for patients above 60 years of age. Due to sedentary life style, lack of exercise & some disease of young age like rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondilitis ,we see lots of patients who has severe disease of knee joint at a very young age. These patients are in so much pain that they cannot perform even their house hold activities. So, actually speaking decision of knee replacement is not based on age of patient but how much suffering he has because of knee pain.

Who are the manufactures of knee joint implants (prosthesis), and which company implant does you preferred?

There are many companies like J & J, Zimmer, , Stryker, Aesqulap, Maxx, Orthovasive, Biomet etc. to name a few who manufacture knee implants(prosthesis). Every implant have their own advantages. We study the patient's X-RAY & then suggest implant (prosthesis) of a particular company. Also, the selection of implant depends on the life style cultural & social requirement of the patients.

Is bone & ligament preserving technique of knee replacement (CR technique) internationally approved?

Yes, recently DR. VRAJESH SHAH presented a series of 1000 cases done by this technique in Asia pacific arthroplasty society (APAS) conference, Mumbai. It was highly appreciated by more than 350 joint replacement surgeons.

What is the life of artificial implanted knee joint?

According to various mechanical laboratory testing on simulators, the knee implant can survive for approx. 25 years. In hands of a skillful surgeon, well fixed and well aligned knee replacement can last up to 25 years or even more.Only condition is, patient has to follows the prescribed life style instruction by the surgeon.

What are the chances of getting infection after knee replacement?

According to various mechanical laboratory testing on simulators, the knee implant can survive for approx. 25 years. In hands of a skillful surgeon, well fixed and well aligned knee replacement can last up to 25 years or even more.Only condition is, Infection rate at viroc hospital is 1 in 200 cases(0.5%). This very well matches with the international standards.

How much walking distance is permitted after knee replacement?

There is no defined distance which a knee replaced patient can walk. Walking distance depends on physical fitness of individual. There are example of patients going for Europe tour, visiting niagra falls & even walking across pyramids in Egypt after knee replacement surgery.

Is there any technique of knee replacement surgery,after which you don't require post operative physiotherapy (exercise after surgery)?

If normal healthy living requires exercise & workouts then don't you think that an operated knee joint obviously will require physiotherapy? Post operative physiotherapy can definitely be reduced & experience can be made painless if knee replacement is done by muscle sparing, ligament retaining & bone preserving knee replacement.

Will it be possible to seat cross leg, squat &/or perform namaaz after knee replacement?

Now a day's knee implants (prosthesis) are available which allows more than 130* knee range of movement. Range of movements of artificially implanted knee is a function of implant design, surgeon's skill and elasticity of thigh muscles. So, if we use this high flexion knee implants & if the patients muscle are elastic then it is possible to sit cross leg, squat &/or perform namaaz.

My mother's weight is about 100 kg & she has severe knee pain. Can she be benefited from knee replacement?

knee implant's (prosthesis) are designed taking into consideration height & weight. Heavy weight is an important parameter during implant designing. so definitely obese(heavy weight patient) can definitely be benefited after this operation(link varshaben bhargav).

My father has severally bowed legs. He walks like a duck, waddling on both sides. Will he be benefited after knee replacement?

obviously, yes. These are the actual patients, who get maximum benefit after knee replacement surgery. Patient's both legs will become absolutely straight & he will be able to walk straight and without limp & (link vipinchandra soni).

My mother has rheumatoid arthritis. She has both hip & both knee problems (arthritis). She is not able to walk. Can she be benefited from surgery?

These are relatively difficult case. Definitely, we can make them walk pain free after offering them both hip & knee replacement surgery.(link varshaben bharghav).

Is it possible to drive vehicle after knee replacement?
